Beauty Beyond Bars

Meet
Beauty Beyond Bars

Beauty Beyond Bars is providing currently incarcerated women at Riker’s Island prison and formerly incarcerated women with free beauty makeovers, personalized product consultations, hygiene and wellness education to support confidence, self-expression, and economic empowerment as the women transition home.

In addition to the holistic health and hygiene consultations, the women will receive free make-up and hygiene products that are appropriate to their skin tone and hair style. The workshops Beauty Beyond Bars offers have been shown to decrease recidivism rates, improve employment opportunities and ease the transition back into society.

About
Beauty Beyond Bars

Beauty Beyond Bars was first envisioned by Lea Nepomuceno, who recognized the need for beauty and hygiene accessibility in correctional facilities during her interviews with formerly incarcerated people as part of Youth for Juvenile Justice Reform. At Beauty Beyond Bars, Lea is meeting incarcerated people where they are — detention centers, jails, and prisons — to deliver essential beauty and hygiene products.  Beauty Beyond Bars believes that beauty goes beyond that of appearances. It is about restoring human dignity in the criminal justice system.
